Ophthalmologic surgeon, peds anesthesiologist, critical care fellow join faculty

Medical Center leadership is proud to announce the following additions to its faculty and leadership staff.

 

Troy Michael Newman, M.D.

Dr. Troy Michael Newman, an ophthalmologic surgeon at Tenwek Mission Hospital, Kenya, East Africa, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of ophthalmology.

After receiving his B.S. in microbiology from Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, in 1995, Newman earned his M.D. in 2003 at the Louisiana State University School of Medicine, New Orleans. He was an internal medicine intern from 2003-04 and an ophthalmology resident from 2004-07 at UMMC before joining Jackson Eye Associates. He also was a glaucoma fellow at the University of Alabama-Birmingham from 2010-11. Newman left Jackson Eye Associates in 2016 to join Tenwek Mission Hospital.

Newman is an active member of the American Glaucoma Society, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Mississippi State Medical Association and the Mississippi Association of Eye Physicians and Surgeons.

 

Kim Poteet-Schwartz, M.D.

Dr. Kim Poteet-Schwartz, an associate professor of pediatric anesthesiology and pain medicine at Arkansas Children’s Hospital, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an associate professor of anesthesiology.

After graduating from Florida International in 1983, Poteet-Schwartz served as a physical therapist at the University of Miami’s Jackson Memorial Hospital from 1983-92 and a pediatric physical therapist at the University of Miami from 1992-94 before earning her M.D. in 1998 at the University of Vermont, where she was an intern at Fletcher Allen Health Care Hospital from 1998-99. She then was a resident at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, from 1999-2002 and a fellow in the Department of Pediatric Anesthesiology at the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin in 2007. She entered private practice in 2003 with Anesthesia Specialists of Albuquerque and was a locum tenens physician before joining Arkansas Children’s Hospital in 2008 as an associate professor of pediatric anesthesiology.

The author or coauthor of four articles in peer-reviewed professional journals, Poteet-Schwartz is primary investigator of a Pediatric Craniofacial Surgery Perioperative Registry research project that captures information relating to the perioperative course and management of children undergoing craniofacial reconstructive surgery. Peer-reviewed e-journal reviewer of Clinical Case Reports and Reviews, she has given 25 presentations at scientific meetings or conferences. Her areas of interest include craniofacial and neuroanesthesia.

 

Luis A. Shimose, M.D.

Dr. Luis A. Shimose, recently a critical care fellow at the Cleveland Clinic, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of medicine.

After earning his M.D. at Universidad San Martin de Porres, Lima, Peru, in 2007, Shimose was an internal medicine resident from 2011-14 and an infectious diseases fellow from 2014-16 at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital, and a critical care medicine fellow from 2016-18 at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.

An active member of the Society of Critical Care Medicine and the Infectious Disease Society of America, Shimose has authored or coauthored nine articles in peer-reviewed professional publications and nine posters presented at scientific meetings nationally. He has also give two oral presentations at scientific conferences.

His special interests include sepsis and septic shock, infections caused by multi-drug resistant organisms in critically ill patients, immunocompromised hosts, and infection control and antibiotic stewardship in the intensive care unit. His current research project is “Outcomes of Patients with Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus Bacteremia Treated with Daptomycin Based on the Initial Minimum Inhibitory Concentration.”
